So Soft Yet (Clean Feed) is an album of beauty and depth. For me this latest collaboration between Gonzalez and Da Silva has even more resonance than their first stellar partnership on 2009's Scrape Grace (Clean Feed). This might be due to the longer relationship together and the new material that feels both more unified and diverse.

"Como a Noite" opens the session in a delightful and romantic fashion. Filling the void with lush poetic tones both musicians are taking you on journey that will include some extraordinary exaltation as well as moments of deep reflection. "Broken Harp" has the feeling of Chick Corea and Miles Davis playing solo. Da Silva switches to electric piano and deploys some terrific and spellbinding notes. It has deep psychedelic grooves with some nice improvising from both men. Gonzalez travels up and down with a crisp and reverberating tone that along with Da Silva becomes hypnotic towards the closing passages.

So Soft Yet is deeply rooted in a more interpersonal manner that allows the listener to sink deeper and deeper into music. "Thirst" sees Da Silva on accordion and the conversation the two musicians have is playful and jubilant. The Portuguese elements are well present on this piece as it feels like you're traveling blindfolded down the town street just listening to all the sounds and creating your journey. Lovely stuff.

"Sobre Mi Mi Koracon Doloryozo" is my personal favourite. It's a celebratory piece that is both buoyant and joyous. Gonzalez and Da Silva have a unison that feels like two classical musicians who have performed together for decades. "Augurio" closes the session with dark parameters intertwined past fusion eras with modern eclecticism with beautiful harmonies.

A partnership that started essentially out of nowhere, these two renowned and revered musicians have made two astounding records in just under three years. So Soft Yet is a cool document that expands the floats with high spiritual moments that spread delicately across space and time. Emotional material and highly recommended listening.

It was another great year of music and new discoveries for us here in the JazzWrap office. So much so that I didn't get a chance to write about all of them over the last week. So I at least wanted to make sure I listed them as much as I could.

None of these are any particular order. I really only decide on my top two absolute favourites and then let the rest lay where they may. (yeah, I know it's kind of pretentious; but so what! :-)

Best Album of 2011: Jakob Bro

Jakob Bro's presence has been raising in recent years. His last release Balladeering, gained critical acclaim along with prior recordings with Tomasz Stanko. Balladeering was a masterful work that featured Konitz, Frisell and the late Paul Motian. That recording was a monumental step in Bro's career as leader. On his latest, Time (Loveland Records), Bro keeps the quartet setting but sans a drummer. This makes for an even more intimate affair.

With Time, Jakob Bro has written material that is even more deep and personal than the excellent predecessor. Here Konitz and Morgan mingle and create some magnificent colours. The paring of two guitar is just as intriguing as it was on Balladeering. Bro shapes the harmonics and soundscapes while Frisell adds the linear passages to pieces. "Cirkler" is a beautiful number in which Konitz and Morgan provide a calming tone surrounded by mood setting atmospherics from Bro and gentle Americana acoustics of Frisell.

Bro's writing has matured and become rich with various textures and sonic layers than even Balladeering displayed. "Swimmer" is a lonely journey down the motorway. It's a quiet and deeply melodic tone that Bro sets forth but not in a depressing way. It's more a matter of being at piece with ones self.

You can sense there's more intimacy on Time. The musicians feel more affected by each other. They have all played together in various forms over the years so they is great chemistry. "Fiordlands" is another bright moment where Bro's writing is uplifting like a Sunday morning church call. It's bluesy but with close sense of joy that quickly takes hold a few minutes in. Konitz and Bro both wrap this piece like chocolate and caramel.

The closing number "Smaa Dyr" is more of a trio (without Konitz) and it's a beautiful way to close out the album. Just as "Fiordlands" its somber in tone but you can feel the uplifting tone that rising as the piece moves further along.

I fell in love with Time minutes after it finished. Jakob Bro has circled himself with great musicians who effortless craft his material into something special. With Time, Jakob Bro should be on the radar of many jazz fans in 2012. He has grown as a leader, composer and performer. The pieces on this session has stuck with in short time of its release in November. That's why I have named Time as my album of year. Highly Recommended.

JazzWrap was honoured to have another opportunity to discuss recording Time with Jakob Bro recently. Here's a bit of that discussion.

1) Since the acclaim of Balladeering how has your recording process changed?

Time is done pretty much the same way as Balladeering…I composed the songs in August - went to a small cottage by the sea in Denmark and just wrote music for one week straight. Two weeks later I went to New York and met up with Lee, Bill and Thomas at Avatar Studio A…we started playing the songs around 11AM and played pretty much without stopping for two hours…most of the songs are first takes (as with Balladeering)…it was a beautiful experience for which I feel very grateful.

2) There's more intimacy with Time without a drummer. Was that on purpose?

Yes! I love Balladeering so much and it didn't feel right to me to go in and do the exact same thing again…so I changed the line up. I love Thomas' playing - On "Balladeering" Lee is featured a lot - on "Time" I wanted to feature both Lee and Thomas at the same time and I thought it would be really cool to do so in a very transparent setting without drums. We also recorded "Time" in a different way than Balladeering. All in the same room - sitting in a closed circle without headphones. That in itself is very intimate , you can't change a note once you've played it and you can hear even the slightest sound coming from each other. It was truly a great way to record and James Farber is so incredibly masterful at capturing the moment like that sound wise.

3) Working with Bill Frisell and Lee Konitz again must have made the recording feel like home?

Well, working with Bill, Lee and Thomas makes me feel honored and very very humble. They all play absolutely incredible on this record and I can't even describe in words how happy I am that they all agreed to join this session and pl`y my songs.

4) Will you be touring for this record?

I'm touring more and more with my own music. Both in a trio setting and sometimes trio with a soloist…also I have been working with my nonet a bit. I do the same songs as on my recordings but of course they sound different depending on the line up. I'm not going to tour with the original line up from Time. I might do one or two shows if logistics happen to match but nothing is scheduled at the moment. I have some trio gigs lined up for my Danish trio next year, 5 gigs with Jeff Ballard on drums also and in the fall I have a 2 week tour with Thomas Morgan and a drummer.

Aeriol Piano (Clean Feed; 2011)

A solo performance from Kris Davis is something not to be missed. On Aeriol Piano, Davis deploys various themes and imagery that are both spellbinding and invigorating. She improvises and moves with dense angles that lead you on a complicated journey but its one that will surprise you.

The complexity of Davis' compositions are sometimes reminiscent of Keith Jarrett or Friedrich Gulda. High praise but Kris Davis is the real deal. Just as John Escreet is creating modern ideas that are moving jazz forward; Kris Davis is moving the idea of free-jazz and minimalism is can go either further.

Drummer, composer, Kevin Brow released his third album, Dolls & Guns (his first two were with his group Koptor) this year and it didn't disappoint.

A unique mixture of improvisation, minimalism and classic themes, Dolls & Guns is an album that demands repeated listens. Featuring 13 collaborators, Brow has managed to make each piece highly rewarding and different. You get the feeling that each piece could be developed into its own full length album.

Kevin Brow's main outfit, Koptor, is more a modern jazz quartet. As a solo artist, Brow has presented a beautiful work in Dolls & Guns that demonstrates his stature as leader and composer are growing rapidly. Definitely an artist to look out for in 2012. Hailing from California, A Giraffe was a pleasant surprise when I first gave it a spin. They are contemporary but with just enough young bite that it standouts from a crowded field. The band's debut, Under A Table features some fine performances circling around some complex structures. Tracks like "You Shouldn'tven't" and "Crucial Present" demonstrate the quartet's flare for excitement. But at its heart, A Giraffe are a modern group with some fascinating ideas rolled into the mindset of four excellent musicians.

The opening track "A Ranger" has multiple counterpoints and is driven by some great improvising by Blum and Santa Maria. Lockwoods drums cut across the plan is crisp, sharp fashion; along with Terranova's pounding drone-like bassline. When I first heard ASA Trio I was blown away. Now almost 12 months later, I'm still stunned by the unity and excitement this trio can generate. Their debut full length, Plays The Music Of Thelonious Monk is fueled by leader, Agnar Mar Magnusson's driving organ. A challenging mixture of John Patton and Larry Young, Magnusson knows when to swing and when to pull back. Both McLemore and Thor add the colourful force around that help the trio's drastically different selections on Plays Monk. The trio move from bluesy rhythms of "Raise Four" to the resounding version of "Straight No Chaser."

ASA Trio was a refreshing discovery earlier this year and I've been trying to spread the news to as many friends as possible. You don't get trios like this very often. Especially a trio led by the organ. Plays The Music Of Thelonious Monk is and album that let's everyone know ASA Trio is a group that must be heard!

Yellowjackets - Politics

I can remember like it was yesterday. The year was late 1989, maybe even a fresh 1990, and I was just a kid; about 22-23 years old. I went to a music store on payday to buy my wife an album; just because (it was Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel). As I was looking around for something different, yet cool I stumbled onto the Politics album. I was still living in the "smooth jazz" world which had recently errupted with the likes of Kenny G, David Sanborn, Dave Koz.etc. Thinking I would get a jazz album with a groove like those mentioned above, I eagerly purchased both albums and went home to surprize my wife.

Needless to say, my wife was very happy with my gift to her. As I listnened to my gift to myself, I scratched my head in confusion. I didn't know what to think of it. I put it away and forgot about it for about a month. Then I decided to pull it out again and listen and this time, I was totally blown away by such musicianship and I have been a Yellowjackets fan ever since.

Politics is one of the best jazz releases in my opinion; simply because it is interesting from beginning to end. At times it's playful in a "jam"
sense yet very structured. You can hear all their influences like Miles, Coltrane and Monk just to name a few, and there is also some groove without becoming too groovy like smooth jazz. The standout track on the album is one called Downtown; Talk about all over the place! This is drummer William Kennedy's shining moment. What a magnificent drummer!

To thouroughly describe Politics would be like trying to explain the secret of life, its impossible! If you are a fan of great jazz without becoming too sappy, this is the disc for you. If you are looking for Kenny G, stay clear of this.

It's a hard release to find. I played my album copy for years until last year I found a cd version and of course I snagged it quick! But just for old times sake, I still play my vinyl version and think back on that cold winter's day of the late 80's and thank myself for taking a chance on this gem.

Karen Mantler - Farewell

After two albums with a band, this work was created just by Mantler and percussionist Michael Evans, and the smaller scale approach suits the subject. The two players' inventiveness is compelling. "Help Me" is a mournful tune centered on the harmonium with evocative percussion underscoring the mood. Mantler sings, with some input from Evans, who adds counterpoint to the character-driven narratives. The mood throughout is not unlike that created on many of the works by her mother, the composer Carla Bley.
After an absence of half a decade, Karen Mantler returned with this somber song cycle in 1996. Where her first two albums (MY CAT ARNOLD, and KAREN MANTLER AND HER CAT ARNOLD GET THE FLUE) chronicled aspects of her life as well as her attachment to her cat, FAREWELL looks at the death of Arnold and her life without him.

David Mott is a baritone saxophonist and composer. He is well known as a solo virtuoso and he has developed many extended techniques for the baritone. A graduate of Berklee College of Music and the Yale University School of Music, he has performed with many notable musicians and ensembles including Gil Evans, Gerry Hemingway, Mark Dresser, Roswell Rudd, Jane Ira Bloom, Herb Pomeroy, Charlie Mariano, John LaPorta, Roddy Ellias, Mark Helias, Stevie Wonder, Ray Anderson, David Lopato, Anthony Davis, Kenny Wheeler, Pat Labarbera, Leo Wadada Smith, Robert Dick, Ernst Reijseger, Chelsea Bridge, John Geggie, I Musici de Montreal, Marilyn Lerner, Evan Parker, William Parker, Jerry Granelli, Michael Vlatkovich, Matt Brubeck, Carlo Actis Dato, Mike Cado Tentet, and the International Baritone Conspiracy. His compositions include 27 commissions out of 125 works and his music has represented Canada at the International Rostrum of Composers and received a CBC nomination for a Prix Italia. He has performed on CBC's Jazz Beat and his music has frequently appeared on CBC's Two New Hours. His recording, The Standard Line received a Juno nomination and he was the conductor of NOJO when it won a Juno in the Best Contemporary Jazz category. Jazz Report Magazine named him Jazz Baritone Saxophonist of the Year in 1995. He was a founding member of the improvising saxophone quartet 40 fingers and Erosonic, a duo with concert accordionist Joseph Petric. His quintet, the DMQ, has toured Canada performing at jazz festivals. David Mott founded the York Jazz Orchestra at York University and many of his former students are notable musicians in Canada and the United States. He currently teaches contemporary and jazz composition at York Univ. where he also supervises composers pursing advanced degrees in composition.

Nicely packaged with nostalgic, sepia-toned photographs on both the box and each individual CD, A Jazz Romance contains nearly 60 songs guaranteed to set a distinctly low- keyed mood, equal parts sultry and sad. The vast majority of the material is from bygone days of the '40s and '50s, with the more recent entries retaining that flavor. The four discs are entitled In Dreams, Ever, Believing, and Always. They're rather interchangeable, sharing many of the same artists and each having as many vocals as instrumentals, yet each does have some distinction from the others.

In Dreams features the great saxophones of Johnny Hodges on "The Last Time I Saw Paris" and Ben Webster on "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning." Ever has marvelous versions of "My Man" by Sarah Vaughn and "The Shadow of Your Smile" by Dexter Gordon. Believing contains a contemporaneous version of "Some Other Time" by guitarist Mark Whitfield and Diana Krall, along with an outstanding example of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's versatility on "Alfie." Always, perhaps the dreamiest of the lot, has Chet Baker on "Alone Together," Illinois Jacquet on "Star Dust," and Stan Getz doing "Thanks for the Memories." Concentrating exclusively on the romantic side of jazz, this compilation contains an abundance of subtle, emotional music offering great listening in addition to setting the all-important mood. --Wally Shoup

Udi has had great success in Europe, Canada, and now the U.S. Now living in New York, Udi has developed into one of the most sought after sidemen, while performing with his own band, "The Udi Levy Quartet", at some of New York's high profile jazz clubs.

Udi's debut CD, "Smooth Jazz Tales", has a superbly refreshing sound. Kind of like Wes Montgomery meet's Norman Brown, sprinkled with a little George Benson. The CD starts off with the smooth mid-tempo song "We'll Meet Again" which will set the tone for the rest of the CD. Udi gets funky with "Funktion", & "Just Say It". Udi also slows the groove down with "Thoughts", "Would You", & "Things From The Heart".

Even though jazz has come to a stand still, there are still jazz artists like him that give and release refreshing new music to the world. Udi's CD is just "refreshing". His playing style comes from the heart - you can feel the passion, you can feel the warmth - it's like he's talking to you through his guitar.

The album effortlessly moves between moments of serene beauty and raucous full-on jams, at times almost ambient in texture, at times sounding like a drunken night of revelry.

The division between composition and improvisation is often blurred, with moments of unison emerging and disappearing unexpectedly, all the time carrying the music forward to new heights.

Developed from an original live concept by Kvernberg, Liarbird follows a structure based on movements, creating a conceptual whole rather than a selection of individual pieces. The intensity of the album increases with each subsequent track, but “intensity” is not merely a term used here to describe increases in boisterous energy; rather, it describes the feeling within each track.

Kvernberg’s violin is obviously to the fore, but never exclusively dominant. Instead, it acts like a guide for the music to follow, leading it through the uncharted territories between free jazz and compositional expertise, with sparse moments of haunting beauty and large walls of full band sound. Minimalist compositional techniques are given a new setting, allowing an unparalleled line-up of musicians to move freely. Accompanying Kvernberg are Bergmund Waal Skaslien on viola and vocals, Eirik Hegdal on soprano, sopranino and baritone saxophones and vocals, Mathias Eick on trumpet, Håkon Kornstad on tenor saxophone, flutonette, and vocals, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten on double bass, electric bass, electronics, and vocals, Ole Morten Vågan on double bass and vocals, Erik Nylander and Torstein Lofthus on drums and percussion.

The opening track, the eponymous “Liarbird” sets the album’s agenda perfectly, with languid notes and elongated harmonies alongside chattering percussion and exquisite soloing. “Boog” creates a kind of Macedonian atmosphere, using exotic scales and obtuse instrumentation, building into a kind of free jazz horo. “Boun’Amina” begins with a clearly improvisational character, although not necessarily existing outside composition, using extended string instrument techniques. It evolves into a kind of shambolic military march, with elements of classic New Orleans jazz ingredients. “Wintermelon” comes in with an utterly different attitude, like classic cool jazz on one hand, bebop on the other, while the feet are almost ready to make their way to the nearest disco; yet the free jazz ethos in never far away. “Vilje” begins with sedate bass, moving towards a chamber ensemble sound. It is perhaps one of the most beautiful pieces of music to grace the Jazzland catalog, and is certainly a highpoint in Kvernberg’s already exemplary career. “Olero” enters with a near discordant pulse, before breaking into a stumbling journey through Middle Eastern vibes and classical overtones. “Cobb” strides in with bravado, a strong beat, strong melodies and harmonies at the fore, and fast becomes a full-throttle improvisational workout. But it retains a DNA structure found throughout the album. “Spannung” brings the album to a close, with broad yet deep structures, and a more distilled sense of the album’s overarching structural intentions. Little motifs abound throughout the album, with each track echoing the others in some way. The unity of each part with the others is unmistakeable.

"Ola Kvernberg has composed a musical masterpiece" said Norwegian concert critic Pia F. Eriksen after Liarbird's performance at Molde Jazzfestival 2010. Allaboutjazz.com critic John Kelman called the same concert "positively nuclear" and listed it among his best live shows of 2010. Norwegian critic Terje Mosnes from Dagbladet followed up with a 6/6 stars review after the group's third performance in Oslo, January 2011.

Trombone Shorty - For True

Troy “Trombone Shorty" Andrews, once again, incorporates all of the fun but none of the fussy formalism of the New Orleans tradition in his new recording, For True.

A contemporary, and vividly frisky, blending of funk, R&B, pop, hip hop, jazz and fusion, Trombone Shorty's second national release is due today from Verve Forecast. Andrews wrote or co-wrote each of the 14 tracks on For True, produced by Galactic saxophonist Ben Ellman, and in many ways the album mirrors the talented horn player's Grammy-nominated, Billboard jazz chart-topping 2010 release Backatown. That is to say, it's great dance music—simultaneously aware of its roots, and willing to transcend them.

One in which it doesn't: For True is peppered with guest stars, something that might work to broaden the audience for Andrews—something he richly deserves—but could also, I feared, lead to a compilation-style unevenness. I needn't have. Trombone Shorty, a force of nature, more often than not simply blows past such worries.

“Buckjump," the shotgun-shack rattling opener, pairs Andrews with Rebirth Brass Band—perhaps the most famous of the Crescent City's brass bands—and Fifth Ward Weebie, a local rapper who combines R&B and bounce. The song, goosed along by a rubbery bass line courtesy of Mike Ballard from Andrew's band Orleans Avenue, builds outward from street-parade sass into a repetitive hip-hop cadence that only makes it more irresistibly danceable.

The connection with the New Orleans funk-jazz jam band Galactic, by the way, goes beyond Ellman's work at the mixing board. Drummer Stanton Moore appears on both “Lagniappe Part 1, and Part 2." Moore and Ellman's band mate Robert Mercurio plays bass on “Mrs. Orleans," which also features Kid Rock—who memorably raps about “Fats' rings" and “Endymion kings." And a few of the songs, notably the thumping instrumental “Dumaine Street" (maybe the best cut here), wouldn't sound at out of place on a Galactic project.

“Encore," undulating and aggressively fonky, is punctuated by the wailing slide cry of Warren Haynes (The Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule), and Andrews' Lenny Kravitz-esque vocals. (Kravitz himself plays bass on the subsequent “Roses," a tune that strongly recalls “Show Me Something Beautiful" from Backatown.) “Nervis" is one of those great 1970s-era space-grooves, featuring Ivan Neville (on clavinet!) and uncle Cyril Neville (The Meters, the Neville Brothers). Jeff Beck, with whom Trombone Shorty appeared during this year's New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, stops by for the R&M romp “Do To Me," unleashing a torrent of microtonal brilliance.

I'll double check, but I think that's all of them. His over-stuffed guest list probably speaks as much to Andrews' desire to move beyond convention as it does to the current trend of cravenly appealing to a mass audience by, well, over-stuffing the guest list. Really, though, his is such a unique and doggedly appealing voice—on the trombone, trumpet and mic—that Trombone Shorty scarcely needs the help.

Check out the title track, which smacks of Dick Dale by way of the West Bank, courtesy of a whoa-man surf guitar turn by Pete Murano. The chorus to “The Craziest Things," all whoops and hollers, sounds like a house party, set to a series of impossibly bright brass blasts. “Unc" has a late-night tango-type mystery, while the sensual, stop-start soul of “Then There was You" (featuring singer Ledisi; there's one more!) allows Andrews an opportunity for some muscular, spit-flying outbursts. On “Big 12," he layers horns on top of horns until the entire song trembles with an almost angry menace.

In the end, though they don't necessarily slow Trombone Shorty's momentum on For True, those big names still felt unneeded. There's a combustible energy to his work, a volatile joy, that stands on its own. ~ allaboutjazz.com

Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis's tough tenor is well-featured with his regular group of the time, a combo consisting of the powerful organist Don Patterson (who dominates many of the ensembles), guitarist Paul Weeden (talented but quite obscure), drummer Billy James, and guest bassist George Duvivier. Backed by a fine Finnish rhythm section, Sandoval and the great trumpeter are both in good spirits playing five of Gillespie's originals including "Wheatleigh Hall" and "And Then She Stopped." Considering that it would be another decade before Sandoval was able to defect from Cuba (and finally play the music he wanted), this recording is of great historic value.

One of the most unique albums of Cal Tjader's career, 1963's Several Shades of Jade is a collaboration with composer and arranger Lalo Schifrin that transposes the vibraphonist's musical travels from Latin America to the Far East. This is no more traditional Asian music than Tjader's similar albums from this period are traditional Latin American music, but the pair wisely avoids the standard clichés of Asian music (no smashing gongs after every musical phrase or melodies that sound like rejects from The Mikado). Instead, Schifrin frames Tjader's meditative vibraphone solos in arrangements that strike a cool balance between western kitsch and eastern exotica, never tipping too far in either direction.

The Mercury Records Jazz Story (1995)

Mercury's jazz division had two distinct and important fathers. John Hammond brought his expertise and connections when Mercury bought Keystone Records in the late 1940's. And Mercury was the issuing company and distributor for Norman Granz's pre-Norgran/Verve recordings. Although both Hammond and Granz had departed Mercury by the mid-50's, they established the company in the jazz world.
Mercury, under its Emarcy label, released LPs by many important post-swing and bebop artists including Clifford Brown and Max Roach, Clark Terry, Dinah Washington, Nat and Cannonball Adderley, Sarah Vaughn, Maynard Ferguson, Jimmy Cleveland, Herb Geller and others. By the early 1960's, Mercury was releasing jazz under the flagship label and was an early leader in the new stereo sound releases.
Highlights of the early and mid-60's included albums by Quincy Jones, Buddy Rich, Cannonball Adderley, Charles (then called Charlie) Mingus, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn, Max Roach and others.

In the early 1950's, Norman Granz started his own record company, Norgran, which later became Verve. In an ironic twist, both Mercury and Verve are now owned by Universal Music Group and Mercury's jazz library falls under the Verve division. Since the early 1990's, Verve has reissued many Mercury jazz titles on CD, often taking care to use original master tapes and including session material not included on the original LPs.
In addition, Mosaic Records in Stamford CT has issued several box sets spotlighting the Mercury and Verve recordings of various artists including Max Roach, Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie and Buddy Rich. (en.wikipedia.org)

Blossom Dearie is rightly considered one of our premier cabaret artists. But Ms. Dearie began her career as a bona fide jazz pianist and singer. She first was heard in 1951 as the female answer voice on King Pleasure's be-bop vocalise "Moody's Mood For Love" and, beginning in 1957, recorded a series of LPs for Verve, of which OOH-LA-LA was the second. Then as now, what impresses most about Blossom Dearie is her fresh sound--light but not delicate, funny, swinging and lyrical when called for.

What might be come off in a lesser talent as a cute schoolteacher routine--Miss Crabtree painting the town a shade of red--is offset by honest musicianship and a real schoolteacher's attention to the English language as spoken. Dearie is one of the greatest lyric interpreters the music world has ever known. Every performance here is a little gem; the Cole Porter title tune receives its definitive performance, sexy as hell, and unknown Dearie treats like "They Say It's Spring" and "Try Your Wings" are just plain sweet and lovely.

This set is rather unusual, for it is strictly instrumental, allowing Ray Charles a rare opportunity to be a jazz-oriented pianist. Two selections are with a trio (bassist Oscar Pettiford joins Charles on "Black Coffee"), while the other six are with a septet taken from his big band of the period.
Key among the sidemen are David Newman (soloing on both tenor and alto) and trumpeter Joseph Bridgewater; highlights include Quincy Jones' "The Ray," "My Melancholy Baby," "Doodlin'," and "Undecided."

It's hard to go wrong with a Ray Charles album. However, fans of the man's beautifully expressive, bluesy voice may be in for a surprise with THE GREAT RAY CHARLES. An anomaly in the artist's huge discography, this disc is wholly instrumental, focusing on Charles' outstanding, jazz-influenced piano playing. The set is a mixture of standards ("The Man I Love," "Ain't Misbehavin'"), contemporary pieces (Horace Silver's "Doodlin'," Quincy Jones' "The Ray"), and several of Charles' own fine compositions.

The absence of this entertainment legend's pipes allows the listener to fully concentrate on Charles' skill as an ivory-tickler. The musician cites both Bud Powell and Nat Cole as influences, and his style hangs beautifully in the balance between technical proficiency and a clean, emotional approach. Strikes Twice was originally released in 1980, and I have owned it on vinyl and the reissued CD. It was recorded back when Larry's quitar style and music bordered on Jazz-Rock-Blues fusion, which I love and which is the basic sound on this album. But I rarely listened to it until the CD and computers came along, which lets me remove & reorder tracks easily. My main problem with Strikes Twice has always been with 2 of the 3 tracks featuring Larry singing: The Magician (#4) and In My Blood (#7), both of which I feel are ruined by his vocals. But, I do like Ain't Nothin' For a Heartache (#2) which also has Larry singing. Contrary to the earlier reviewer, I do not like the all the guitar work on Springville (#5), which borders at times on being noise rather than music (my ears). Other than tracks #4, 5, & 7, the rest of the album is excellent and typical of Larry back in those days (1980).....if you enjoy his 1978 self titled album "Larry Carlton" you will enjoy "Strikes Twice" too. In conclusion, I like only 5 of the 8 tracks, which for me means this album is good or not bad, but certainly not great.

Carlton is one of these guys who practices constantly. I've heard tell that he'll walk around the house wearing his guitar and blowing scales -- and will even sit eating lunch with one hand and hammer on patterns on the neck with the other. This release showcases not only some of his more pyrotechnical playing, but also some of his most tuneful and hip playing as well. Check out "Springville" for sheer, over-the-top with-the-changes screamin' guitar soloing. Long live Larry!

Casiopea was the debut album of the jazz fusion group Casiopea released in 1979. The album showed two racecars racing each other on a raceway.

Recorded between December 1978 and March 1979, "Casiopea" is Casiopea's self-titled debut album. The Album's release date, May 1979, marked a strong beginning in their Career, and even though the lineup in the band didn't remain as such, and some of the members were replaced a couple of years later, the band had already the sound that becomes its trademark in later albums, a sound provided by Frontman and Guitarist Issei Noro as well as Keyboardist Minoru Mukaiya, both of which are Original, Never Replaced, members of Casiopea. The album includes the participation of some notable contemporary Jazz players as David Sanborn on the Saxophone, giving a special touch to Issei Noro's compositions, tunes like Black Joke are part of the multiple performances and variances along Casiopea's career. In some of Casiopea's Later Albums, Black Joke and Midnight Rendezvous are 2 songs that Casiopea sometimes Re-records, and Performs, in different Variations.
"Casiopea" is an excellent debut album that absolutely will guide New Casiopea fans to their vast career. The album is undoubtedly a good point to start up, and it's important to remark that the band started to tour in Japan very early and an album in live was launched just a year later of their formation, being Casiopea's debut album a historic point of reference.
The Casiopea discography has become very collectible, the band is not as popular as many Jazz bands but counts with thousands of fans around the world. This album was recorded on LP in 1979 as ALR-6017 and years later in 1986 on CD under the 32XA-104 catalog numbers, being the first editions on both LP and CD.

Guests include smooth-jazz vets Abraham Laboriel, Kirk Whalum on sax, Jerry Hay on horns, Michael McDonald for a lone vocal track ("'Til I Hurt You"), and Vince Gill, who duets transparently on "Gracias." This record is unusual—it presents only one part of my musical world, the blues. A year ago, Nesuhi Ertegün suggested that I record an entire blues album in the style of Haitian Fight Song (in Atlantic LP 1260), because some people, particularly critics, were saying I didn't swing enough. He wanted to give them a barrage of soul music: churchy, blues, swinging, earthy. I thought it over. I was born swinging and clapped my hands in church as a little boy, but I've grown up and I like to do things other than just swing. But blues can do more than just swing. So I agreed.

In her liner notes to Volume IV of the Art History Project, Art Pepper's widow describes him as a self-hating, alcoholic sex addict who turned to heroin in order to suppress these tendencies. Second only to Charlie Parker in the DownBeat polls of the day, nobody played alto saxophone as smooth and cool as Art Pepper. Unreleased Art, a three-disc set comprised of two-thirds never-before released material, traces Pepper's life in music from his golden era in the '50s through his prison- interrupted discovery of John Coltrane in the '60s, and concludes with his final period, fresh out of rehab in the '70s and playing as if his life depended on it.

Swing music, also known as swing jazz or simply swing, is a form of jazz music that developed in the early 1930s and became a distinctive style by 1935 in the United States.

Swing uses a strong rhythm section of double bass and drums as the anchor for a lead section of brass instruments such as trumpets and trombones, woodwinds including saxophones and clarinets, and sometimes stringed instruments such as violin and guitar, medium to fast tempos, and a "lilting" swing time rhythm. Swing bands usually featured soloists who would improvise on the melody over the arrangement.
